August 2010 PDF Print E-mail
As school restarts and we wrap up our summer holidays, the month of August marks a “new year” of sorts. What better time to rethink your look and invest in a few new key pieces for late summer and fall—especially with all the huge sales happening this season. It’s all possible seven days and seven nights at Aventura Mall.

TRENDS
Lavish Laptops: A new school year calls for a new digital start: Pick a PC packed with features that work at lightening speed, so it’s as effective for homework as it is for entertainment. The VAIO EB Series Laptop ($899) comes in fun colors like Caribbean Green and Hibiscus Pink and includes Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, and was designed with a 15.5-inch LCD, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, a Blu-Ray player, Intel Wireless Display and HDMI out. Available at Soy Style (305.932.4078).

Adorable but Al ways Appropriate: Looking for a frock that seamlessly transitions from the desk to after-work dining? We love this Doubly Adorned Dress ($148) from Anthropologie (305.933.3512), by Floreat. The button-front dress is gently topped with two bows, which suggests femininity and a formal flair, while the menswear plaid communicates that you’re all about business as usual.

Straight-Legged and Sufficiently Torn: Every woman needs a pair of jeans that are as comfortable and flattering as they are edgy, hip and perfect to pair with anything. Case in point: AG Adriano Goldschmied’s (305.692.5330) 22 Years Destroyed ($275), with long, straight, skinny legs and an ever-so-slightly higher rise. The best part about this sexy denim work-of-art is how they’re handcrafted to replicate a true vintage jean: The appearance is naturally aged, but the fabric is brandspanking new.

A Real-Life Handbag: This could be the quintessential shoulder bag tote, ideal for lugging books and personal electronics as well as all-important cosmetics and car keys. Available at Kipling (305.935.0303), the Deffa Medium Handbag ($94) in “Inky” blue has plenty of pockets, pouches and zippers to keep you perfectly organized. Wrinkle resistant nylon means your bag is as resilient as you are, so no need to handle it (or life) with kid gloves.

Twinkle Toes: Your little girl will be the talk of the class with these gorgeous, attention-grabbing, Wizard of Oz-inspired glitter ballet flats ($58) from J. Crew (305.935.2739). The shoes—which come in gold, black or silver—are made from cotton, with an elasticized band that keeps them in place when the little twinkle toes kicks up her heels. The sparkly numbers jazz up any ensemble, and match with everything.

Fashionable in Façonnable: Bright, beautiful color is everywhere this fall, but it’s important to do it tastefully: Stripes can be artistic, slimming (when vertical!) and delightfully geometric. Façonnable’s (305.792.2610) collection of cotton, poplin multicolor shirts ($175 each) are ideal for summer, smart-casual fun. Pair with jeans (denim or white) for a standout seasonappropriate look.

WHAT TO SEE
Turnberry for the Arts is a dynamic cultural initiative of Turnberry Associates, owner and manager of Aventura Mall, incorporates contemporary art and education at Aventura Mall. Recognizing the positive impact that art can have upon people of all ages from all walks of life, the mission of Turnberry for the Arts is to enhance the experiences of local residents and visitors from the U.S. and abroad in innovative ways. The Turnberry for the Arts collection currently features outstanding artworks by some of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists, including Donald Baechler, Louise Bourgeois, Gary Hume, Jorge Pardo, Jaume Plensa, Julian Opie, Lawrence Weiner, Tom Otterness, and Friends With You.

Los Angeles-based artist Jorge Pardo explores the relationship between functionalism and aesthetics and his work incorporates elements of design, architecture and beauty. The 96 lamps in this site-specific work take the form of butterflies that are alluring, practical, and question the viewer’s definition and expectation of what is considered fine art. Pardo commented to The New York Times that he hoped the installation would make shoppers stop in their tracks, noting, “A lot of people want to take pictures of themselves in front of the butterflies. In that sense it’s really cool, because it works like a traditional monument.” Pardo work is included in the collections of such museums as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami.

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.

Get free downloads for Internet Explorer 7, including recommended updates as they become available. To download Internet Explorer 7 in the language of your choice, please visit the Internet Explorer 7 worldwide page.
